Alright Team,
Re-staining your porch or installing new cabinets might have you thinking "I know what business I'll get into, home building...." After talking with two pro home builders, I'd hear them out before jumping both feet in.
I spent the day with Schuyler Williamson and Nic Andreani, Co-Owners of Mission Homes and learned that there are 5 key things you got to have if you want to stay in business. Material costs, trade volatility and interest rates all factor into putting a profitable home building plan together.... Even selecting the wrong street in the same neighborhood can blow up the entire deal.
We talked about:
The Team: What does good skillset chemistry between co-operators look like
Leveraging your network. Folks want to bet on you... just ask
How to know your market and build for the "gap"
We didn’t sugarcoat it. Mortgage rates get the headlines, but what’s really freezing people up right now is job volatility. Folks feel uncertain about the paycheck that’s funding the house in the first place.
Bottom line: You can't control the Fed or the market, but you can control your mix of skills, your plan and your Team.

We Must First Lead Ourselves
Each time I meet a committed Owner, I’m reminded how disciplined they are.
Even the small things matter. They get up at the same time each day. They honor their work out routines and close shop in time to be at that baseball game they told their kiddo they were going to be at.
If we can’t honor the commitments we make (even the “small” ones), then what business do we have being in business and leading others?
My conversation with Schuyler Williamson (West Point Grad, Combat Vet and Former Pro Baseballer) dives in the very reason that leadership matters… especially in small business.
The economy scares many of us, not because we don’t have the right business model, but I think deep inside we are insecure about our ability to lead through storms…. Will our own knees buckle.
Schuyler hasn’t accidentally kept a home building and real estate business thriving, it took planning, diligence and discipline to say “no” and keep his business running.
This episode will keep you grounded and inspired to be the best version of yourself.
